This book is an account of the sacrifices of Ethiopian Christians of evangelical conviction presented within the framework of the growth and consolidation of evangelical Christianity in a country with a long history of a dominant state church. It recounts the endeavors of indigenous evangelists who, with the full cooperation and support of expatriate Protestant missionaries, initiated in the early twentieth century a grassroots evangelical movement, which spread the gospel in the western and southern part of the country using a chain-reaction evangelism strategy. The author shows that the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus is firmly rooted in the grassroots evangelical movement led by local evangelists and their missionary supporters.
The book establishes a connection between the coming of European Lutheran missionaries to Ethiopia in the nineteenth century and the rise of evangelical communities and congregations in southern and western Ethiopia that ultimately resulted in the establishment of the EECMY. The collective biography of indigenous evangelists gives an amazing texture to the narrative of the expansion of evangelical Christianity
