Publisher description
This comprehensive collection of vital U.S. government documents on tsunamis provides a thorough review of every critical aspect of this serious threat to life and property. Twenty-four tsunamis have caused damage in the United States and its territories during the last 204 years. Just since 1946, six tsunamis have killed more than 350 people and caused a half billion dollars of property damage in Hawaii, Alaska, and the West Coast. As a tsunami nears the coastline, it may rise to several feet or, in rare cases, tens of feet, and can cause great loss of life and property damage when it comes ashore. Tsunamis can travel upstream in coastal estuaries and rivers, with damaging waves extending farther inland than the immediate coast. The word is Japanese and means "harbor wave," because of the devastating effects these waves have had on low-lying Japanese coastal communities. Tsunamis are often incorrectly referred to as tidal waves, but a tsunami is actually a series of waves that can travel at speeds averaging 450 (and up to 600) miles per hour in the open ocean. Tsunamis are most often generated by earthquake-induced movement of the ocean floor. Landslides, volcanic eruptions, and even meteorites can also generate a tsunami. Material in this collection includes:
* Complete text of SURVIVING A TSUNAMI-LESSONS FROM CHILE, HAWAII, AND JAPAN - This heavily-illustrated book from the U.S. Geological Survey contains true stories that illustrate how to survive and how not to survive a tsunami. It is meant for people who live, work, or play along coasts that tsunamis may strike. The stories in this book were selected from interviews with people who survived a Pacific Ocean tsunami in 1960. The stories provide a mixed bag of lessons about tsunami survival. Some illustrate actions that reliably saved lives-heeding natural warnings, abandoning belongings, and going promptly to high ground and staying there until the tsunami is really over. Others describe taking refuge in buildings or trees or floating on debris-tactics that had mixed results and can be recommended only as desperate acts.
* National Disaster Education Coalition, including FEMA and the USGS Guides * West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center (WC/ATWC) - for California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska - FAQ, Complete Operations Manual with technical information and depictions of warning center operations * Property Protection Tips * Tsunami Watch and Warning Terms
After a Tsunami (Shovel Mud before it Solidifies!) * Facts and Fiction * What You Should Do - On Land; On a Ship or Boat - Knowledge is Safety - Move Quickly to Higher Ground * World-Wide Tsunamis from 2000 BC by National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) * Scientific Characteristics of Tsunamis * The Great Waves - Looking into the Eyes of the Monster * Tsunami Research Activities - NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory * Complete text of an important paper authored by an expert of the National Weather Service on North American tsunamis.
* Complete text of DESIGNING FOR TSUNAMIS - Seven Principles for Planning and Designing for Tsunami Hazards - A multi-state mitigation project of the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program (NTHMP) National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and National Science Foundation (NSF)
