Excerpt from The Life of Sir Charles J. F. Bunbury Bart, Vol. 2: With an Introductory Note by Sir Joseph Hooker, C. B., G. C. S. IDecember 2131. Our host tells us that within the last five years, persons have emigrated from this island to Demerara and the West Indies. This is a greater emigration, in proportion to the popula tion, than that from Ireland. Two-thirds of the num ber, it is said, are already dead, but the remainder are growing rich. The peasantry here seem very poor, but a good, mild, obliging, cheerful set of people, very industrious, - great beggars all the same. The failure of the vine-crop has of course told heavily upon all classes, but most of all upon the small pro prietors. But even before the grape disease came, I am told that the incomes of the principal merchants had been considerably affected by the change of fashion in England with respect to wines, the demand for Madeira being so greatly diminished.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
