Publisher description
The long-term care (LTC) industry is troubled with high levels of nursing aide turnover. High rates of turnover negatively impact patient care and cause high training and recruitment costs. Previous research has shown that by allowing nursing aides membership on treatment care teams, turnover can be minimized. In addition, the personality characteristic, conscientiousness, has been described as a predictor of prosocial organizational behavior. Theoretical foundations included the five factor theory of personality and Halbur's three-factor model of nursing aide turnover, which were used to examine the relationship between conscientiousness and nursing aide turnover. Hypotheses include that nursing aide team membership will decrease turnover and inferior care, and high levels of conscientiousness will decrease turnover. A total of 118 nursing aides from ten LTC facilities contributed data on the independent variable, LTC team membership, and the dependent variables: turnover rates, quality of care and individual personality data. Independent t tests showed no statistically significant differences for relationships between team membership and nursing aide turnover or between quality of care measures and team membership. A Pearson's r correlation indicated a statistically significantly positive correlation between conscientiousness and turnover rate, which was contrary to the hypothesis. Continued future attention to this issue will further assist LTC facilities in decreasing nursing aide turnover, which in turn, should positively impact patient care and reduce training and recruitment costs
