Publisher description
Leadership development continues to be a significant topic of exploration and direct application within many sectors of the academic and professional sectors, but unfortunately, not within the field of psychology. To date, there are no APA sponsored divisions or journals dedicated to this dynamic and increasingly important subject area. The primary focus of this dissertation is to not only further illuminate the applicability of leadership development as it applies to the future growth and success of psychology as a whole, but to also present a theoretical model that highlights the four major areas of leadership development training critical for current and future practitioners. The Four-E's model, as proposed in this dissertation, is comprised of the following components: Exploration, Experience, Education and Evaluation. Exploration stresses the importance of self-reflection, and consistent appraisal of one's interpersonal development towards becoming a professional psychologist. Experience examines the benefits of mentor ship and networking as they help facilitate an increased sense of awareness and collaboration within the field. Education stresses the critical importance of training specific to Multiculturism, Public Policy and Advocacy. Lastly, Evaluation explores the direct application of 360-degree feedback during Leadership Development training for psychologists and its overall utilization within the professional practice of psychology. As psychologists continue to face challenges on numerous fronts, it is becoming increasingly apparent that they will have to transcend traditional roles/practices, and begin to embrace new skills and occupy largely foreign positions in order to help ensure the future growth and success of the discipline. It is my hope that this dissertation will serve as a starting point, and that others will take my message and build upon it well into the future
