Publisher description

This single-case study investigated the developmental influences that facilitate leadership identity in African American undergraduate students at a small, private, predominantly White institution. The researcher used an exploratory, mixed method design, conducted through individual and focus group interviews, as well as a quantitative researcher-authored survey, correlated through use of SPSS (v.15). The research purpose was to examine developmental influences of leadership identity through adult and peer influences, meaningful involvement and reflective learning in a university context by exploring Erikson's (1950, 1959/1980) theory of identity development for adolescents, and the Leadership Identity Model (LID) of Komives, Owen, Longerbeam, Mainella, and Osteen (2005). Qualitative interviews were transcribed and coded by the researcher for analysis of participant responses. A non-parametric test (Spearman's rho) was utilized to compare responses on the quantitative 28 question, researcher-authored, Likert-response survey. Research results yielded support for all research questions, including the comparison of experiences and perceptions by classification of study participants, personal leadership identity development, as well as views of university administration and experiences. Interview responses and quantitative findings led to conclusions that African American students can experience growth in leadership identity development through a variety of experiences and involvements at a predominantly White higher education institution. Implications for university administration and student affairs educators are discussed, including methods for developing African American students and institutional commitments necessary for successful leadership identity development, along with recommendations for future research
