Publisher description
Early adolescent friendship and romantic relationship patterns tend to be different from young adult friendship and relationship patterns. The primary purpose of this study was to compare the patterns of early adolescents' same-sex friendships, opposite-sex friendships, and romantic relationships. Twenty-four early adolescent participants (12 female and 12 males, mean age = 12.81 years) recruited from the community participated in this study. Additionally, 49 students (25 females and 24 males, mean age = 20.10 years) from the University of Texas at San Antonio also participated in this study. A distinct pattern of expectations was revealed in this study. Namely, early adolescents have the greatest emotional dependability and social solidarity expectations for their same-sex friends while young adults tend to reserve greatest expectations for their romantic interests. One possible reason for this discovery is that in early adolescence, more intimacy and support are gained from same-sex friendships, while in young adulthood, romantic relationships are seen as the most intimate and supportive type of relationship
