Accordingly, we shall find, that the diffusion of Intelligence among the Greeks and Romans, only served to restrain among them the grosser overt acts of the Amonian Idolatry, while its spirit or essence remained as virulent as ever. The difference lies here, that, in the " State of Nature, " the Amonian Idolaters, obeying the influences of natural corruption, and the inspiration of apostate spirits, wallowed openly in all the excesses of cruelty and obscenity. But in the " State of Intelligence, " their "wickedness was more concealed, hidden, veiled with prelcwls, extenuations, arguments, ratiocinations, quibbling, 'and " all deceiveableness of unrighteousness." 615. Thus, when the Amonian priests began to lose their as-_ Iendancy over a fierce and barbarous people, no longencapable of entering into their philosophical ideas respecting human sacrifices, they were obliged to invent pretezls for continuing that execrable custom. The first and most natural of these, was to compel the person intended for immolation, to nlreslle with one of ' the priests trained to that exercise; so that the stranger, having " no chance, " was sure to. be overcome, and butchered, of course, " according to rule and reason." For this method seemed exceedingly fair and just among savages, lost to all feelings of humanity; and their ideas on this subject were also now warped by another perversion. 616. I have observed, that the world had now arrived at that stage, when mar and bloodvhed being universal, it was necessary, that ferocious men should be taught, to dread the " God of Battles."
