F)ROPHECY and the interpretation of proph- -L ecy have fallen into disrepute by reason of certain modern predictions which have been published from time to time, and which have been confuted by the event. Yet it is very far from the truth and from reason to conclude, as some have done, that nothing can be known about the interpretation or the fulfilment of prophecy. On the contrary, the events of the hundred years last past have shed light on the prophetic books in a way unexampled and surprising. It is intended in the following pages to set forth briefly the principal facts, as they have been already ascertained, which pertain to the fulfilment of prophecy; many of which are to be discerned in the vicissitudes of Christendom and of the Church of Christ; and likewise to regardother matters pertaining to the prophecies which are yet confessedly obscure. The two prophetic books on which interpreters have spent their labor, and, on the whole, not without the most useful results, are the Prophecies of Daniel written more than five hundred years before Christ; and the Revelation of St. John written about ninety years after Christ.
