From Gen. i. 1, on to the end of Gen. ii. 3, " God " is the only name for the Deity; within that space the name occurs thirty-three times. There the Deity is regarded simply in the capacity of God or Creator; but afterwards, when the history of the human race begins, he is contemplated, not merely as God or Creator, but in addition to that view, as the Ruler or Governor of the world, and has the compound appellation of " the Lord God " given to him. By " God " is meant the Second Person of the Trinity by whom all things were made. In the progress of events, when the same divine Person takes upon himself the character and offices of the Saviour of mankind, he is called "Immanuel, " "the Christ, " "the Lord Jesus Christ
