The roll of Yorkshire Worthies is a long one, and so rich is it in names distinguished in every kind of knowledge and action, that it is easy to understand how the claims of some men equally deserving of the title may be overlooked. Surely the subject of this First Chapter is fit to take his place amongst the best of them; yet but little has been hitherto done to preserve him in our memories. An attempt to remedy this defect will form a not unapt introduction to the task we have undertaken. The Gargraves were a family of some antiquity in the neighbourhood of Wakefield, as a well-authenticated pedigree of them shows. Sir John Gargrave, Knight, described as of Snapethorpe and Gargrave, was Master of the Ordnance, and a Governor in France under King Henry the Fifth. He was tutor to Richard, Duke of York, who was slain at the Battle of Wakefield, in 1460. Sir John Gargrave was buried at Bayonne, in France. Prom his second son, William, was descended Thomas Gargrave, who married Elizabeth, daughter of William Levett, of Normanton. The only issue of this marriage was the subject of the present memoir. Thomas, the father, owned some land in the " Pear-tree Acres, in Kirkgate/' Wakefield, as appears by an inquisition taken in the reign of Henry the Eighth. That the "Pear-tree Acres " was the site of the son's birth-place, is touchingly evident to us by his own words; for towards the close of his long life, he prayed the Queen to be allowed to pu
