Now, it seems, they break out afresh, and again you have to ' Take up arms against a sea of troubles, And, by opposing, try to end them!' but these, it is to be hoped, will be of short duration, for those who really know you or the bank can certainly have no doubt as to its entire safety. The bank owes me as much, or perhaps more, than any other depositor; but knowing your connection with it as treasurer, and having such entire confidence in Howard as its cashier, I should not feel the least alarm if fifty runs were being made upon it. Besides, pa, let me now say to you, while we are upon the subject, that if you are obliged to raise money for the bank, and can use any securities I have, you are entirely welcome to them; or if there be any other way in which I can possibly assist you, don't fail to let me know." " My ever faithful, darling wife, I trust we shall have no occasion to call upon you for assistance; but if we should, or whether we do or not, I shall never forget your kind, generous offer. God bless you, my darling, forever and ever! " This conversation occurred in the early part of the evening. About eight o'clock the Doctor went to the bank, where he met his sons Howard and Ludwig, and where he remained till near midnight, examining into the affairs of the bank and consulting with his sons as to the best way and means of meeting the run now being made upon it. When he returned to his rooms his wife had retired, and he, too, soon after went to bed, but not to sleep. He had learned from his sons facts relative to the securities of the bank of which he had not the slightest knowledge before. It had been about a year (when the previous annual statement was made to the Legislature)
