Publisher description

Although Blacks have lived in the Rocky Mountain West since the first black slaves accompanied Spanish "conquistadores" to New Mexico around 1535, their accomplishments, asserts Roger Hardaway, have long been overlooked. From the 1970s-1990s historians researched this topic and publicize their contributions. This volume brings together in one reference source the information on this topic drawn from over 50 books and 150 articles, categorized in groupings such as cowboys, soldiers, women, business-people, Blacks and Mormons, and discriminatory laws. Each chapter begins with a brief narrative summary of the topic gleaned from reading the appropriate sources and then lists each relevant book and article in an annotated bibliography for each chapter. The text should prove of use as a research and reference tool on the subject for historians, students, and librarians
