This special issue focuses on the evaluation of interventions designed by the STARBRIGHT(R) Foundation--a non-profit organization dedicated to creating programs to empower children and adolescents with chronic and serious illnesses to cope with the challenges they face and better manage their diseases. In this era of healthcare reform and carefully monitored financial resources, it is essential to establish an empirical basis for practice, including the implementation of innovative media-based interventions. The research represents the initial foundation for this empirical database. These data serve to establish a baseline for additional, well-designed quantitative investigations with larger sample sizes from diverse populations of children and adolescents. In addition, nonsymptom variables, such as treatment acceptability and consumer satisfaction need to be examined. A focus on emerging technologies, interactive interventions, and prevention strategies will allow professionals to shape the healthcare environment for children with chronic illnesses and their families in a positive direction
