Publisher description

This study investigates a selection of Gilman's short stories in the light of her assertion that women do not have to give up love or work in order to succeed in life. Yet, as this study proves, the problem with this ideology is that although 'both' embodies two elements - love and work, there are in fact three factors operating within the equation - marriage, motherhood, and professional life. This study takes a fresh look at a figure who was highly influential in the woman's movement in her day, and whose writing can still be seen as realistic and pertinent to the debates surrounding women's place in society today. This book offers an investigation of a selection of Gilman's short stories in the light of her assertion that women do not have to give up love or work in order to succeed in life. Rather 'both can be done' and Gilman aims to show how in her didactic short stories. Yet, as this study proves, the problem with this ideology is that although 'both' embodies two elements - love and work, there are in fact three factors operating within the equation - marriage, motherhood, and professional life. In trying to bring together these elements, Gilman wrote stories which assert the possibility of achieving a way of life beneficial to all, but which tend to focus on just one aspect or another of her overall manifesto. This study demonstrates that, although the short stories do present her views and ideology, they also reveal the conflicts and contradictions within those views which are particularly noticeable when placed alongside her essays and lectures
